This year, (1999), Ysgol Llanddulas is organising another international story writing project to produce a finished story for your entertainment on WORLD BOOK DAY in April. You can still see last year's effort on our site. It was called, 'Bob, the World's worst stuntman'
We wrote the last one by sending the opening paragraph to another country for them to add on a section. They then returned the story (including their new section) to us and we then sent the ever growing story on to the next school and so on...
To pose a challenge we stipulated that each school had to suggest an artefact from their country for the following school to include in the section they were about to write.
This year the story is going to be written in reverse (hence the title of this page). Ysgol Llanddulas will begin the project at the end and finish at the start !! (confused?)

Time travel armed with a sandwich spread
"Bye, see you tomorrow" shouted Nelson to his best friend, Matt as he was cycling away.Nelsons BMX bike was brand new so he was practising wheelies and skids as a bright light caught his eye. He was Hypnotised by the dazzling light. To get away from it Nelson looked downwards at the dusty floor. His bike screeched to a stop, he had a puncture. He ran behind a hill to shield himself from the light. Puffing and panting he sat down and lying next to him was a newspaper. On the front page it said ` Mighty Defender saves yet another civilian from a space alien.` When he had caught his breath he said "I had better get mum ." He started running home with his bike, as he ran a loud booming voice said " Do not tell anyone of this until another man sees it." Nelson arrived home with his punctured bike a few minutes later. When he opened the door his mum was not in, so he went upstairs and got changed out of his school uniform because it looked as if he had been in a peat bog and he put his tracksuit on instead.
This, the final part, was written by Katie in Year 5 at Ysgol Llanddulas on June 15th. 1999 4 months after the story writing began here in Wales on February 10th. It was selected from story starts written by the whole class by Terry Smith during his visit to our school. Terry, a teacher from Texas, USA, was involved earlier in the project when the story was going backwards around the world as it landed in his classroom in Georgetown, Texas. (See their part below),
One dark night men working in the coal mines in North Eastern Pennsylvania decided that they had worked enough for one day. As they were walking home they saw bright lights in the sky . One man said "they are only shooting stars" so they ignored them but they were alarmed. About five minutes later the lights landed on the hill. The men were puzzled so they went home and got their guns and went up the mountain. They were amazed at what they saw. Suddenly a bright light blinded the eyes of the men. Nelson, cycling home past the hill, saw it all and ran home and told his family what he saw. The next morning when Nelson woke up he looked out the window and saw that more ships had landed. He called his mom and when his mom looked the window she was surprised at what she she saw. His mom told the family to pack their bags. She told them to get in the car that they are moving to New Mexico.(This part written by Inver National School, County Mayo, Ireland. Our friends in Wales have to include something about peat bogs )
Nelson and his family worried they would have to
move from Roswell, New Mexico because of an alien sighting. Their grandmother,
Narrabeen was scared that her gun, vegemite, she was working on would get stolen.
They were afraid the aliens would take the gun. They hurried up and moved to Texas.
While on the plane Nelson's dad told him not to eat anything, just in case of spies,
but Nelson was too hungry. He took out some of his favorite chocolate. He saw
a girl sitting nearby looking at the chocolate. Her eyes showed that she was afraid
of it, so he put the chocolate away.
The plane started to lose altitude and the pilot made an emergency
landing in Lubbock, Texas. As Nelson and his family were leaving the plane,
the girl with the strange eyes whispered to Nelson, "Follow me." So Nelson
and his family did. She took them to the Buddy
Holly Statue. They stared at the statue and
saw a holograph of an alien space ship. The space ship was destroying New York City
and other big cities.
Nelson and his family returned to the airport and got on another plane to take them to
Houston, Texas. They knew what they had to do to stop these aliens from taking over
the Earth. They looked around the and the girl with the strange eyes was gone.

After visiting Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, Nelson and his family decided to move to Las Vegas, Nevada. They made reservations at the Luxor Hotel and stayed there while the movers were moving them into their new house. Nelson went to the back of the hotel to explore and he overheard two men talking. They said: "The ship is ready to take off." The other man said: "I will go get them!" Nelson wondered who or what "them" was.
He went back to his room and discovered that he needed to meet his teacher. He headed for the door with his mom. Suddenly a boy ran up to them and said,"Hi! I'm Junior!" They became friends immediately.
When Nelson returned to the hotel later that day, everthing suddenly froze except for Nelson. He was the only one eating vegemite (an Australian sandwich spread he had become partial to since watching 'Skippy the Bush Kangeroo' on TV). He saw a man with a shadow that was too big and weird, then the man sprang onto the hotel roof and there was a flash of light then everything was back to normal. It was starting to get dark, so Nelson went to his room to do his homework.
That section was written by Jeffrey and Cynthia of Williams Elementary, Texas, USA on May 12th. 1999. Their fellow Americans in Pennsylvania have to include one of Texas' famous landmarks, in their section (The Buddy Holly Statue in Lubbock)
Nelson had heard some strange noises while finishing his multiplication assignment at his desk in his room. At first he thought he was tired and hearing things but then the sound grew louder. He lifted the blinds on the window and to his surprise there was a large oval spaceship with a million lights. The lights were so bright he could not tell exactly what was making the weird movement from what appeared to be a launching pad. He ran to tell his brother in the next room. His brother thought he was crazy and told him to go to sleep. He pleaded with his brother to wake up and view the bright lights, but his brother continued to sleep. When Nelson went back to his room and looked out the window the ship had disappeared.
The next morning Nelson and his brother picked up thier friend Jr. And began walking to school. Jr. told them that they wouldn't believe what he saw last night. Of course Jr. had witnessed what Nelson had tried to get his brother to see. The three decided to launch an investigation after school.After school they went to the spot where the spaceship had appeared last night. They found a map that said to be on the Mezzanine at Circus Hotel on Saturday afternoon to find the next clue.
On Saturday they geared up and went to the Mezzanine to find the next clue. They walked for hours and still couldn't find any. Suddenly a loud bullhorn went off. A man had just won mega bucks and billions of quarters were coming out of the slot machine. Because of all the commotion no one noticed that the canopy on the Mezzanine had been taken off and what appeared to be the mother ship was coming down. A huge creature came out and said they needed the quarters from the jackpot to fuel the mother ship. And with a twist of the alien's snorkel, the mother ship began eating all the quarters in sight. The hotel guest thought this was a wonderful show provided by hotel management; little did they know they had just witnessed a close encounter with life from the world of Zoombeanies.
My brother and Jr. wanted to go home and act like it was just a show. But I knew the natives of Zoombeany were up to no good. I overheard one telling the captain of the ship they needed to add a monolith to the fuel grinder for maximum energy. So I went home to research monoliths. If my theory was correct the Zoombeanies next stop would be ULURU, formally know as Ayres Rock, because it was the largest in our world.
I pushed the secret button on my door, and transformed into the Mighty Defender. I packed all my secret ammunition. I looked at the picture of my brother and I on my desk. I knew that when I came home, things would be different because I was going to have to journey into the future in the Avenger ship. I left him a note trying to explain all the things that had been a secret to him for so long. I punched in the secret codes, and the countdown began 10..9..8..7..6..5..4 3..2 ..1
That section was written by the children of Lois Craig School, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA on April 12th. 1999. Their fellow Americans in Texas have to include one of Las Vegas' famous landmarks, the great pyramid of the west ."The Luxor" hotel located on the Las Vegas Strip in their section. You can even take a trip on the river than runs through this amazing hotel.
Off I flew into the future to find the Aliens. I found them eating Leek Waffles. They looked horrible so I took action straight away. I went back to my jet and got a flashlight. I drew the Aliens into an igloo by shining my light in their eyes. They ran all over the ice trying to avoid the bright flashlight. Finally, many of them found refuge in this igloo. I parked my jet in front of the doorway and turned the front lights on. I rushed into the jet to get some Belgian chocolate because Belgian chocolate kills this type of alien species. I made a hole in the top of the igloo where the aliens were hiding, I began to put the Belgian chocolate down the hole.
A few hours went by and I went to check if the aliens were dead. Most of them were dead except for the few that had got away. They looked like the leaders of the bunch. The remaining aliens hurried to their spaceship and headed towards a cave so I followed them in my jet. The cave looked safe to me so I entered it. The aliens were hiding behind a Snow Blob which I also had to destroy as a part of my mission. I was walking towards the Snow Blob when I remembered I had a box of matches in my pocket so I took a match from the box and lit it. I walked towards the Snow Blob but I was shaking too much to hold the match. I dropped it and the aliens ran away. The Snow Blob was also about to escape when I got out my vegemite gun, which my Grandma Narrabeen had loaded with highly flammable vegemite. I sprayed the Snow Blob with the vegemite and I lit it with another match and it caught on fire. Then I ran out of the cave otherwise I would be toast too!
When I returned from my mission, some things in my family life had changed (this time travel sure gets confusing at times!). My brother was desperate to retire from his dreadful job of sports teaching in a difficult Primary School. The principal had treated him like " dirt" for years before he felt that he had had enough and wanted to retire early. His wife was pregnant too but thought that he was too early to retire being only 27! I had always been close to my only brother so I felt overjoyed at the news of a baby on the way!
That section was written by the children of Joan of Arc School in Sydney Australia on March 4th. 1999. The Americans in Las Vegas have to include one of Australia's famous landmarks, 'ULURU', formally know as Ayres Rock, the largest monolith in the world. GOOD LUCK
After I had defeated the Snow Blob and some of the aliens in
Antarctica, I followed the trail of the remaining aliens in my intergalactic jet to
Belgium. I followed their trail into a cave behind a waffel stand near the Atomium. In
this cave the aliens who had escaped from me were making leek waffels.
Being near the Atomium, one of Belgium's most famous landmarks, I noticed there were not
as many tourists as there would be at that time of the day. I looked around cautiously and
then I noticed a thick, smooth, green substance covering one window of the Atomium.
"Leeks!" I exclaimed loudly, too loudly.
There was no movement for a few moments. All of the sudden, the aliens came running out
towards me. I quickly went through my bag to see if there was anything I could use to
fight them off. I didn't have any luck, so I started running as fast as I could. Just as
the Atomium was almost out of sight, I realised that nothing was chasing me. As a matter
off fact, none of the aliens had budged out of the shadow of the Atomium.
Then, I remembered that this kind of alien was afraid of the sunlight and it's weakness
was chocolate. I went to the chocolate factory and made arrangements with the factory
people. I went back to the Atomium and lured the aliens out. Just then the helicopter came
by and sprayed them with vegemite and liquid chocolate!
That section was written by the children of the International School in Brussels, Belgium. The Australians in Joan of Arc, Sydney, have to include that famous Belgian gastronomic delight, Belgian Chocolate....
I have almost finished saving the world, now all I have to do is save Australia. I am going to stay with my Granny Narrabeen. She is a scientist who invented the Vegemite Gun (which, when shot at an alien, kills him / her / it). We will use it when we drive the aliens out of Australia.
I heard that the aliens had started to invade teachers in the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Then guess what? I heard what was happening with those leeks! The aliens were freezing and crushing them, then forming them into green lollies with chocolate coating.
When I entered Elanora Heights Primary School I discovered that the aliens were were invading the teachers and causing them to give out leek lollies as rewards for good behaviour. These leek lollies turn kids into plataroos! But at 2:55 they become children again so the parents do not believe their stories.
I raced back to Narrabeen's house where she had started to produce some of her vegemite guns. Quickly I grabbed two of the guns, hurried back to the school and started to shoot vegemite at all of the aliens.
There was a fearful mess - brown blobs here, brown blobs there, brown blobs everywhere. However ......
That section was written by the children of Elanora Heights School in Sydney Australia on March 4th. 1999. The Belgians have to include VEGEMITE in their paragraph. (vegemite is a type of spread for bread)
"However, what the scientist had made was most extraordinary. Now everyone believed me and no longer was I branded a fool. Even my mother was convinced but there was still my brother ..who lacked the courage to retire from his old school."Here is the closing paragraph written by Nicola (age 11) at Ysgol Llanddulas and sent off backwards around the world on February 10th 1999. We have asked the next school to include a LEEK in their paragraph. The leek is a national emblem for Wales
