For reasons we cannot explain, Class 1L have adopted the aardvark as their favourite animal and topic of conversation. Here Mr Lavelle offers you an ode to this humble creature
The Passing of Orycteropus
Having practically no teeth,
It sucks and hoovers,
Unlucky ants and passing termites,
Depart the planet,
Lassoed on its sticky tongue.
Tufted donkey radar ears scan left and right,
Listening for the heavy footfalls,
Of unlikely ants and prancing termites,
Hurrying home to their African high-rise hotels.
Claws, powerful as a JCB bucket,
Tear mud walls asunder,
Causing unlearned ants and petrified termites,
To race deeper into the dark interior or,
Turn and fight the pink serpent probing their galleries and tunnels.
The Dutch named the Earth - Pig,
For its rooting snout and tell-tale table manners,
Unquiet ants and precautionary termites
Duck low as its kangaroo tail beats the soil,
Signalling the passing of the Aardvark.
