Raynes Quarry
Quarrying began in 1860 by local people. Stone was supplied by barge to Liverpool.
The quarry was bought by the company which became ICI in 1921.
The new jetty was built in 1984 and now approximately 70% of the new quarry's output is exported by ship. 25 ships leave every month each carrying 2000 tonnes.
They mainly go to the Thames Estuary or Germany.
Here are some photos of the Raynes quarry that we took on our visit. |

| Here we are setting off to the top of the quarry to be told how dangerous it really is. Some of us could not fit in the trailer so we went in the landrover. We went past the stock pile of stones and we saw the silt pool, it all looks very dangerous. | Here you can see group 2 looking at the stones which must be over ten foot tall just think what would happen if that fell on you, in less than an hour you would be dead, so do not go digging in there. |
